I first met Adam at his school and it was soon clear that he had many complex issues that had been relegated by everyone into the "too hard" basket. No autistic child is too hard, that's a poor excuse for not trying or incompetence. These pictures tell some of the story.

This set was taken at Irabina Special Development School, Melbourne, in 1995. Anthony and his father cruise around the south Pacific on a yacht which his father was building as these pictures were taken.

In 2006 I visited Poland to speak to parents' groups, schools and autistic people. From Krakow I travelled to Oswiecim and in bitter cold took these photos. Although there were guided tours, I kept to myself, not wanting to be told where to go or what to think. This haunted, cursed place tells its own story. These pictures are of the death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, and of the main camp about 5km away. There were many others in the region.

It isn't The Autism Picture Page but most of the pictures were on there at one time or another. It doesn't have that site's breadth. It's a memento and a reminder: autistic people are people like anyone else, with issues (like anyone else).

There are many Brightons in the world. This one is a southern suburb of Melbourne, Australia, and the area in which I grew up. Each picture has its story.

Silver was discovered in Broken Hill about 130 years ago and in nearby Silverton a little later. The mine at Broken Hill is flourishing and is the only reason the town exists. It's located in western New South wales, Australia, about 1,000km from the state capital, Sydney. The closest city is in fact Adelaide, South Australia, from where it takes its time and nearly all supplies, including communications. The climate is desert.

I've had the good fortune to pass through or spend time in this country quite a few times. It's unique and I like it. These pictures were taken in Roissy, Charleville, Sedan, Nancy and Paris. I'll change them from time to time.

I first visited Ireland in January, 2006. I've returned several times to work with especially difficult autistic individuals. This country has been good to me. This set was taken on the first visit, the only one on which I've had an opportunity to photograph the countryside.

It's not a country I would ever have though of visiting but I was asked to go to one town only, Vianden, and this set is all of this place. It dates from Roman times and is set in a steep, winding valley. It's picturesque and pleasant. The nearest supermarket is an Aldi in Germany. The local language is a strongly dialectal form of German, although notices and street signs are in French. I'd arrived from The Netherlands and moved on after a week to Germany.

The Netherlands is small. You can drive around it in less than a day. Dutch society is humane and well-developed in every way. The countryside is flat, wet and not very scenic.

Australia's most populous state, although not the largest in area. The state capital is Sydney, a large, truly cosmopolitan city.

In the early months of 2008 I drove from Toronto to Nova Scotia to New Jersey and back to Toronto via Niagara Falls. There were people to see, things to do and the fact that it was mid-winter just a fact I had to deal with. In November 2011 I went back with Adam.

In the south, isolated desert. In the north, isolated tropics. It's hard to know where to start: it's so different and has so much to see that you just have to go there to appreciate it. This is a tiny sample.

When I'm exhausted after gruelling work in Ireland, the UK or Europe, then Singapore is a great place for R&R. It's vibrant, clean and very, very safe. Being on the equator, it's always warm and often humid but it's so picturesque I tend not to notice it. I can't recommend this place enough.

Between them, South Australia and the Northern Territory occupy the mid-section of Australia. South Australia is mostly desert except for some regions in the far south. It's a liberal place, having led the nation in many reforms.

Tasmania is an island south of Victoria, and Australia's smallest state, both in population and area. It's a backwater and this has served it well by preserving some spectacular pristine wilderness.

This is an album for dedicated, lifelong transport fanatics. The people called "rivet counters", "gunsels" or just plain autistic. Go to any transport retro or event.....we'll be there in droves.

Tucumcari is a small town in eastern New Mexico. It's sinking fast. I went there because I was asked to go. It has two things going for it: a good dinosaur exhibition and an astonishing history museum, crammed with items of interest over three floors and two outbuildings.

It has grotty cities, too many cars, a prohibitive cost of living but some beautiful rural areas. Since childhood I've thought of this country as being a somewhat dystopic version of Australia.

Australia is a federation of several jurisdictions. Victoria is small in size but has the second largest population after New South Wales. This set is a mix from many so I'll change the pictures every so often.

It's Australia's largest state, occupying the western third of the country. The population is small however the state capital, Perth, has around 1.5 million inhabitants and is very livable. A large part of WA is desert, the rest is beef or wheat country.
